It’s great when we have the opportunity to try our hand at some different types of photography.  In portrait photography I love the fast-paced action and having to be quick on your feet.  In contrast, doing commercial photography and focusing in on details slows things down and you need to be a bit more meticulous.  It actually plays quite well to my obsessive-compulsive side!

Randy and Angelika run the Fernie Tea and Coffee House and we asked them if they’d be OK with us coming in early one morning to do a few shots.  They’re both about the nicest people you’ve ever met and were more than willing to let us do some pictures, though I’m not sure they were quite prepared for our elaborate lighting!

Here’s a few of my favourites.

Randy and Angelika taking a quick break in the morning to enjoy a coffee.The beginnings of a traditional Japanese Matcha.  It’s made from a very fine powder and, after mixed, the end result looked like it was radioactive!  It tasted delicious!

If you’re thirsty for a warm beverage here in Fernie, I strongly recommend paying them a visit!  You can find them at 2nd Ave & 5th St.

Well, it was another cold one here in Fernie. The trade-off on both occasions though for the ridiculous temperatures is the amazing light that comes streaming through the Valley. While I don’t think that I would want to shoot in minus 25 on a regular basis (my fingers can’t quite hack it) I can definitely see the silver lining.

I just realized how many black and white photos I chose for this blog post! I can’t help it! I am a sucker for high-contrast black and whites!

There’s an answer to a trivia question here somewhere. Like, ‘how many bridesmaids does it take to get a 50 ft limo going up a slightly icy hill?’

We’ll skip to a bit later in the evening… perhaps the best ‘action’ capture that we’ve ever made at a reception!

These guys are getting married here in Fernie in a couple of weeks, so when we met up with them for their engagement session this afternoon we gave them a choice. Option A was to hit some spots that we had pre-scouted around town and Option B was to take a drive southwards on Highway 3 to “see what we can see.” They were up for a little exploring and we ended up near the tiny town of Elko. I think they made the right decision!

Breaking some rules again. Have I ever mentioned that I like breaking rules?

And this, this is what often happens when we go exploring… we find cool stuff! Just as we were driving out of town, we noticed that we drove over a huge culvert. A quick signal later and we were down exploring. Far and away, my favorite location of the afternoon.

And saving the best for last. This is easily my favorite shot of the day! Looking forward to the wedding guys! Pray for snow!

I can’t believe how many people skate at Bowness Park in Calgary on the weekends! We met up with Angie and Stu there to do their engagement session and were greeted quite literally by hundreds of people. While it was entertaining to see that many people all trying to all share the same piece of ice (think of hundreds of ants scurrying around in a confined area and that pretty much sums it up), it didn’t make it easy to get pictures of just Angie and Stu. We grabbed a few shots there and left to find something a little less populated.

I love getting off the beaten track with our photography and using locations that most people would overlook. It’s been a while since we’ve wandered though a an alley, using the derelict buildings, textures and vibrant colours. It makes for great contrast and some unique pictures.

This one is my favourite…but only by a little bit.Another solid contender.

Obvious answers aside, I am not quite sure how it came to be 2009. The past year was incredible – I’m amazed at the places that we’ve been to, the people that we’ve met and the things that we’ve learned about ourselves and our business. In the past few months we’ve finally had an opportunity for that all to digest and sink in. With that in mind we’ve taken the time to map out some of our goals for the coming year and ask the fun questions: How we can continue to improve at what we do and how we can offer our clients an even better experience? We’re very excited with the answers to those questions – and hope that you will stay connected to this space to see what we’re able to come up with in the coming months. So even though we just shot a wedding a few weeks ago we were still chomping at the bit for Steph and Rob’s wedding to come around – to get 2009 started.

The last time we were at Heritage Park there was a torrential rain that prevented us from using the grounds. No such restrictions this time (other than a foot and a half of snow) and we made sure to incorporate some of the candy-striped walls into the romantic portrait session.
