When Jamie contacted us back in February, she asked if we had ever done maternity photos before. We told her that we hadn’t, but that if we were to, that we would want to do it in a ‘non-traditional’ way. Less of the stereotypical maternity photos and more like a lifestyle session with an obvious focus on the story of her pregnancy. And since we aren’t studio shooters it was going to have to be outdoors. She wrote back and told us that was exactly what she was interested in!
When we were out mountain biking the other day we found a sweet location north of town with easy access from the highway – we were super pumped to be able to use it with Jamie and Brad.
I don’t know much about much, but I do know that if I was 8 1/2 months pregnant, I wouldn’t look this good… Now there was a mental image that no-one needed!
Thanks so much guys! We had a blast! To all of our blog-stalkers, we would love to know what you think! (We reaallllly love comments) And since I am in a good mood today – I will give away a $10 i-tunes card to one of the commenters on this post! Tell us what you think of our approach to maternity photos, tell Jamie and Brad how ridiculously good-looking their child will be – whatever it is, just say something!
JennaVery impressive guys! she looks like she is only 5 or 6 months along...I'm sure she is making alot of moms jealous by these pictures:)
Kristen BraggI just want to say how beautiful these pictures are. I can't believe Jamie is going to be a mom already......Pregnancy has totally agreed with you, you look beautiful cuz.......Can't wait to see pictures of the little one. Congrats!!
AngieThe pictures are beautiful. I haven't seen Jamie pregnant and I appreciate the opportunity. I want you to know that you have captured the beauty of such a spectacular girl... and a most devoted husband.
KellyAMAZING photos!!! Jamie and Brad look incredible.
Cindy WarnkeThe picture in the meadow with Jamie and Brad kisses and touching Jamie's tummy is awesome!!! Definately my favorite!
6:8Thanks for the nice comments everyone! Wade was the lucky winner of the itunes card!
FRESHnice to see something different; i like different!
KarenAmazing pictures of Jamie and Brad. Jamie is just glowing...she looks fabulous. I can't wait to meet her new addition. I love the picture of both of them lying down. Again great work:)
KathyI love your photos, I really do. Ever since Halyne and Andrew's wedding I have been following your blog. I really like the way you approached these maternity photos - it's not often you see maternity shots taken outside like this with a focus on the belly and yet not an overemphasis. My favorites were the second and third from the end. I like how they link up the family and capture their love and excitement. Nice work!
blogstalkergroupieCool pictures. Nice that the dandelions are working out for someone!!!
ZoeStop being the best at every photo opportunity! :)
LOVE that the two of them were there... have seen a few takes on maternity photos but having both mum and dad to be there looks so awesome. 3rd from bottom screams perfection!
Wade CarsonWow! Unbelievable! You guys look 100% ready for the little one to move in. There isn't a setting for these photos that would better suit you two than the mountains - I will take one of each!
love you guys - our thoughts are with you as the day approaches!
wade, brandee and ryenne
LauraWow! That's new and exciting! I really like the ones in the field of yellow flowers (9, 10, and 11). Especially the head to head one. I hope I look like Jamie when I'm that pregnant!
KevanAwesome guys! Keep 'em coming - I'll leave the contest for the gift card going until we put up our next blog post (probably Monday sometime)
MandiYou guys are absolutely incredible. I have been following your blog ever since you did Mike and Becky Schorr's wedding and I am hooked. Your approach with these maternity shots are something new, and fresh, and something you don't see...I only wish I could go back to when I was pregnant 3 years ago and have something like this. AWESOME JOB... You guys ROCK
LeahHey Guys, Great pics! I love them! And you say you don't know how to do maternity??? I think you proved yourself wrong :) Jamie, I miss you and wow do you ever look amazing!! Congrats, and can't wait to see the baby pics :)
6:8...I think this is a route you should take more...
AlishaGreat first shoot boys! My favourite is the one of the two lying head to head. They look so happy and content with life! And Jamie and Brad - your kid is going to be crazy good looking! And lucky duck if he/she gets to grow up here!
Christine ShankowksyLove these pics guys, great work!!! What a fantabulous looking pregnant woman!
BrandiI was going to comment without the chance for a giftcard :P They ARE gorgeous, what a hot hot momma. Beautiful shots too, the scenery around there always makes me jealous. ;)
BrentAs usual, great job guys. I think outdoor maternity shots are a great concept. I especially like the one with her lying on her back in a field of yellow flowers, just seems so peaceful. Did they come out to you in Fernie? Cause if so then it wouldn't work to take shots of them in their house, but I have seen that done before and it works as well.
Stephanie MorganJamie and Brad, your photos are amazing!!
I like the direction that these photos took, that is why people hire you guys, because they love your non-traditional, natural approach to photos! Thats why we love you!!
Tiffany @ bride-on-purposeHey guys! You got some great shots! I really love #2 (right), 7 (right) and 9. I think the 'lifestyle' shoot is interesting in maternity, but makes it a bit awkward to get the bare-belly shots... but you did a great job of it! #9 with the baby bump below the mountain is really sweet :) #11 is really sweet, and classic... and that meadow, beautiful! Oh, and PS, that girl makes pregnant women look bad... she is gorgeous!! And 8.5 months?!?! Come on, she is still wearing belts?!?! AMAZING!!
Saturday was a crazy fun day with these two – a day full of sunshine and laughter. That sounds cliche I know, but I really don’t think that these two (especially Erin!) stopped beaming all day. It was good to shoot in Edmonton again – its been a little while. Shooting in new locations definitely opens up the creative process – it allows you to see things in a new way. Thanks for having Duane and I along; we had a great time!
Before I moved out West I used to work in an ice-cream shop back in Ontario. It was an awesome job and one of the things I really liked about it was that almost everyone who came to the store was happy and excited. It’s the same thing being a photographer. Aside from a bit of nervousness at first with being in front of the camera, people are happy and excited about their sessions. Lisa and Scott were no exception to this rule.
We thought we’d change it up this time around and meet up with them in the morning and had a great time exploring around Carburn Park in Calgary.
This next one is my favourite from the session.
Thanks guys! We’re looking forward to hanging out again this summer at your wedding!
Now that we’ve been at this for a couple years, I’ve really started to notice the cycles of being a wedding photographer. Starting about mid-April; you start thinking about the upcoming wedding season quite a bit – excited about the venues and the couples that we’ll working with as well as thinking about new ideas and poses to try. By the beginning of May I am starting to get downright antsy, ready to get the show on the road and excited to see what will happen. I couldn’t think of a better wedding to start the summer season with than Laura and Leif. One of the things that I love most about our jobs is the friends that we’ve made along the way – it almost felt like we were shooting at a family member’s wedding.
As always, Duane started out the day by grabbing some bridal preparation shots at the salon:
He was joined by our good friend, past client and talented photographer Zoe. Her husband Quinn (Leif’s brother) was in the wedding party so she kindly agreed to come along as a second shooter. If you get a moment, make sure that you check out her website!
The ceremony and reception was held at the beautiful, Pinebrook Golf Course on the west side of the city.
Sharing a quick moment after the ceremony.
We knew that we had a potential winner for the car shot when we found the vintage Shell sign in Bragg Creek!
This shot serves two purposes. First and foremost it shows off Laura’s fabulous shoes (she was very excited about them). But secondly, it allows me to whine about the snow! Snow! Seriously!? Most people are ready for summer now, but to be honest I would even settle for spring….If I remember correctly, a goose flew overhead right as I snapped this next one…
This one might be my favourite from the day…
These next two show the beauty of having both Duane and I shooting together. Because while I was getting this shot…
…Duane was getting this one!
I asked her if she wanted to trade but she took one look at my ugly black camera and turned me down cold.
Leave the camera unguarded for just two minutes and this is what happens…
Sometimes there are just no words…
Thanks again guys for including Duane and I on your day – we had a blast! Looking forward to going out to the lake with you later this summer!
cindyWow this photographer did such a great job!!!Very happy for you guys, Look forward to meeting with you on wednesdays!!!
KarenGreat pictures of my beautiful second cousin and her handsome new hubby :-)) What a handsome couple!!!
BrandiAww what an adorable couple and great shots!
68fanclubI like how personal you two get with the groom...
blogstalkergroupieWow!! What else can I say. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better.... I'll stop hopping now and just stalk. Thanks - you boys are absolutely fab. And more.

If you follow our blog regularly you’ll know that we haven’t been the best at posting new content for the past couple weeks. We’ve been working on a new project that we’re really excited about and it’s been taking up a lot of our time and have been meeting with a lot of the businesses in Fernie. Yesterday we stopped by the Elk View Lodge to meet up with Kirsty for a quick interview and some pictures. You may recognize the Lodge from Zoe & Quinn’s wedding from last summer. We’re really excited to shoot here again this September at Tiffany & Ian’s wedding.
Here’s what the Elk View Lodge looks like from the outside…
…and here’s a few of the inside. It’s one of those places where it would be hard to leave after staying there a while!
