Aries Entertainment – Wedding DJ and Entertainer

One of the great things about our job is the opportunity to meet new people, both clients and other wedding vendors, and have those people turn into friends. This is exactly the situation with Jeff McRae who owns Aries Entertainment in Fernie. We first met Jeff at Alisha & Tyler’s wedding here in Fernie in August 2008 and have since had five other weddings where Jeff has taken care of the music / entertainment for the evening.

Jeff isn’t your average DJ – he doesn’t just stand around and play songs. He is a natural entertainer and has an innate ability to read a crowd, play music that will keep them entertained and dancing, and keep the evening moving along. He adds life into his show, conversing with the wedding guests, donning a variety of costumes that fit the style of music that he’s playing, and most importantly, he has a great time with it.

Today we met up with Jeff to do a quick photo shoot to update some of his marketing materials. It’s hard not to have a smile on your face when Jeff’s doing his thing. He had us in stitches while “modelling” his various costumes, posing for the camera, and cracking jokes in between. Below are a few of the shots.

A Contest! Which is your favourite image?

20,092. That’s how many wedding pictures we delivered to our clients in the past year. We started out with a goal of narrowing that number down to our ten favourite images, but we quickly discovered that it’s no small task to try and do that! After much discussion and debate, we couldn’t quite get there! It is no exaggeration to say that it took most of the day to go from the top seventy-five down to the top thirteen – we just couldn’t make any more cuts. So, these are our favourites.

And here is where you come in, because what fun is a top ten list without a contest and some prizes? At the bottom of this post we have a survey set up to find out which one of these shots you think is the very best image from 2008. The winning couple will get one of our fine-art canvases of their favourite image from their wedding. Voting will be open until midnight on December 31st. So vote, encourage others to vote, leave comments – convince others of your choice! We’ve had an amazing year and feel tremendously blessed to be able to do what we do and we just want to say a huge thank-you to all of our clients. Below are the images and a little story to go along with each one.

We cover the entire day, all the way from the preparations in the morning through to the reception. Before we started covering weddings neither of us had any clue what brides go through to get ready. Guys, we really do have it easy! We think that this shot, from Becky and Mike’s wedding back in March, really captures that part of the day.

Zoe & Quinn were married in Fernie at the Elk View Lodge. It was a small and intimate wedding; very laid back and a lot of fun to cover. Zoe had a bit of time to herself while she waited for the guests (and groom!) to arrive. We captured this image while she quietly anticpated the ceremony.

This next one comes from a very recent wedding. Chelsea and David were married at First Baptist in Calgary, one of the older churches in the city. The sanctuary is beautiful and really conveys a rich sense of solemnity with its detailed architecture.

Having two of us really comes in handy sometimes. It allows one of us to get the “safe shot” while the other one can be a little more creative. This is one of the most unique ceremony shots of the year. We feel that it’s a bit of a ‘twist’ on a very traditional moment.

We love the spontaneity of weddings! We’ve learned to always have a plan, but to encourage and expect the unexpected. When Alisha stopped to go show off her dress to some friends between locations we happened upon this old couch when parked in a back alley. Of course, having an adventurous couple is what always brings these sorts of moments together! We love the contrast between the ugly, dirty couch in an alley and Alisha and Tyler, dressed in their wedding best.

This shot of Andrea, Derek, and their best man, Briar, was taken in March out on Lake Minnewanka. We think that is it safe to say that there are not too many people in this world that have ridden their dirtbikes on a frozen lake on their wedding day. We love the look on all three of their faces in this picture. Derek is obviously fufilling a fantasy, Briar could be thinking, ‘Dude! Be careful!’ and Andrea is like, ‘Seriously? Just don’t hit me please.’

If we didn’t tell you when this shot was taken, it would be very difficult to put a date on it. Our goal is always to leave a story partly untold in each image, and this may be the best example of that from 2008.

When I think of Michelle and Adam’s wedding, I have vivid memories of one of our lenses falling off the front of the camera and crashing into the concrete! While that wouldn’t make our top-ten list of best moments from, well… ever. It did however, have a positive effect, in that it forced us to use different lenses and ‘see’ the day a bit differently than we normally would We love the attitude in this shot.

It’s fun to isolate moments in the camera and we love using depth of field as a tool to tell the story. Nothing complicated for this picture of Jessica and Josh – just a classic image that speaks for itself.

Mike’s got the smirk and Becky has the pose. Between the architecture and confidence of these two it would have been pretty hard to go wrong with this shot.

Avery and Zak had one of the more unique weddings that we covered this summer. The theme was vintage and they pulled it off perfectly. Just as we started doing their formals we found an old truck sitting on the property and knew that we had to use it. We love how both the colour and theme came together in this image!

Halyne and Andrew were married on a property on the shores of Sylvan Lake and they let us steal them away from their receptions at sunset. Halyne loves green apples and received this one as a gift from her sisters so we wanted to incorporate it into a couple shots. I love the colour!

Alisha and Tyler – Fernie Wedding

It’s awesome when we get to be involved in a friend’s wedding. Alisha and Tyler were married this weekend in Fernie and we had such a great time with everyone there. Last year we did pictures for Aaron and Megan, Alisha’s brother and sister in law, and they chose to structure their day in a similar fashion. They met up in the morning for pictures and opted for a late afternoon ceremony. Both of them were really relaxed and we had a great time roaming around Fernie for a few hours!

…and the dress. This would be the third dress that Alisha’s mom has had a hand in making for the brides we’ve taken pictures of. The other two were Megan’s and Julie’s.

Megan was the hair and makeup artist for the day.

There were lots of emotions when they saw each other for the first time!

Tyler is a Hosmerite so it was fitting that we got a shot of Mt. Hosmer in the background.

If you can classify it as the industrial section of Fernie, then we went into it for a few shots.

Alisha wanted to go show off her dress to her coworkers. We pulled into the back alley and noticed a beautiful couch just sitting there, screaming to be used

Both Alisha & Tyler were adventurous and when we saw these purple flowers on the side of the road we asked if they’d be OK going into them. Little did we realize that the flowers were probably standing 6 feet tall! They were happy to go in none the less!

This barn was great to shoot around!

One final location where they took a walk down Earl’s runway out in Morrissey for a little alone time before the ceremony.

Tyler is a bit of a clown and got in front of the camera while waving around Alisha’s parasol. Too bad for him I was there to push the shutter!

One of the highlights of a wedding with this family is the dance. Here’s Aaron and Alisha pulling out all the stops!

Alisha & Tyler – Fernie Engagement Session

Well everyone, here it is! The final shoot from our crazy week! We met up with Alisha & Tyler in Fernie to do their engagement session. You may recognize Alisha from Aaron & Megan’s pictures from last summer. These two were a blast to work with. Our jobs are pretty easy once people get to know us and get comfortable with us running around like the paparazzi. With Alisha & Tyler, our job was made that much simpler because that part was already out of the way!

Fernie is such an amazing place to shoot. It really has everything and it’s all compressed into this nice little area. Great textured walls, crazy alleys that are hidden away for someone to stumble upon accidentally, and lots of natural features too. Honestly, we could shoot in Fernie all the time!
